Mayfield Preview

Date published: 05 June 2014

Mayfield make the journey to Leeds on Saturday as they face Milford Marlins.

Their hosts have had a poor start to the season by their standards with five wins from their ten league starts and are sitting in fifth place in the division. They come into this game on the back off three losses so will be looking for a positive result against Mayfield.

Mayfield have not had the best of times at Milford over the seasons falling foul on more than one occasion. This is always a physical contest between two competitive sides and no different is expected on Saturday.

Last week's victory was not much more than a training session really for Matt Calland's free scoring team. Defence was much improved but this will be a sterner test for them so there will be no complacency in that department. The forwards were again in control of their opposite numbers and the backs made the most of freedom around the field running in tries all over the park in a great display of open rugby.

Milford's artificial pitch should favour the Mayfield style with a mobile pack and tricky half backs.

Mayfield's NWML side are also on the road as they make the journey to Warrington to face Burtonwood in the semi final of the NWML Trophy. This is a real opportunity for Dunc Simpson and Anthony Greaves side to turn the season around. The opposition are in the division below Mayfield and sit just below the half way position but the coaching staff will not be underestimating them after some poor showings themselves.

NWML Trophy: Burtonwood v Mayfield - ko 2.30pm
