Shaw Cross 12 - 64 Mayfield

Date published: 18 September 2014

Mayfield wound up their season in Dewsbury last week with an emphatic win and class performance from the premier division bound team.

This was one of Mayfield's best displays of the season and again a game in which they totally dominated and outclassed their opponents.

The day was a personal victory for the coaches Matt Calland and Sam Butterworth with Calland's try putting him second in the divisional try scoring list and Butterworth's personal points tally of 20 points, try and eight goals making sure he finished top of the points scoring charts with 191.

This was a great performance from the two old stagers with fifty years of rugby league experience between them. It was Butterworth who opened the scoring for his side after 12 minutes with a well worked try after good work from Liam Whalley and Ben Butterworth.

Further first half tries came from Rob Kershaw, Hick Hargreaves, Seta Tala, and Gaz Ellison along with four conversions from Butterworth.

Mayfield only made two mistakes in defence and Shaw Cross siezed on them both scoring two converted tries to keep the half time score an air of respectability at 12 - 28.

Sam Butterworth was involved in almost everything Mayfield did showing he still has the skills and stamina to compete for at least another season.

Second half scores for Mayfield came from Whalley, Matt Calland, Todd O'Brien, Joe Qanuici and two for Declan Sheridan. There were some great tries from the Rochdale side; they all came from playing fast open rugby, throwing the ball around the field and backing up the player in possession.

All these assets are what Mayfield will need in abundance to compete at the highest level in the premier division next season.

Outstanding performers were Dec Sheridan, Liam Whalley, Gaz Ellison, and a MOM from Sam Butterworth.
