Rochdale skier Daisi Daniels has started this year’s ski season with a golden glow after securing three gold, one silver and one bronze medal as well as being awarded the best achiever trophy at the 2015 Anglo Scottish Cup and BSA Championships.
12-year-old Daisi, a pupil at Beech House School, has moved up to the U14s group in Alpine Ski Racing.
Her first race on real snow this year was at the Anglo Scottish and British Ski Academy (BSA) Championship in Las Houches France.
Daisi’s first day of racing was Saturday 3 January which saw her take part in the BSA U14s Slalom races. With conditions cold, Daisi’s first race didn’t go as planned with Daisi ending the day with no points.
Saturday 4 January saw Daisi compete in the Anglo Scottish Cup U14s Slalom. Opening with some good team spirit and putting her first day behind her, Daisi shot into first place after some good runs and a DSQ from another contender.
Daisi’s second run was not so clean with a slight hick two gates from the finish which dropped her into third place. With her times combined, Daisi was ranked in second place. Then the news came that the DSQ had been overturned placing Daisi in third place overall in the U14s category.
On day three of the competition, Daisi put in an excellent first run which put her in the lead by 1.37 seconds. After her second run and a long wait for her second time, Daisi had just been piped to the post by 0.25 seconds putting her combined times into second place overall for the U14s.
Day four of the competition saw Daisi compete in the U14s Giant Slalom. With a bronze and a silver medal already under her belt, Daisi was looking forward to the day. A good first run put her in the lead by 0.56 of a second and another good run would secure the gold medal. Number 27 out of the gate, Daisi stormed to the second fastest time securing the gold medal with her combined times putting her in the lead by 1.89 seconds.
The final day of the competition included the Anglo Scottish Cup Super-Giant Slalom. This was the first time Daisi had raced the Super-Giant Slalom and was very nervous about it. This discipline is a longer course and done on longer skis with a bigger turning radius.
Daisi's time was the last of the girls to come in and she smashed it with 1:18.79 - putting her in the lead by 4.64 seconds in the U14s category which secured her another gold medal.
The second race was for the BSA Championships Super G U14s. Not feeling as anxious, Daisi put in another good run bringing home her third gold of the week.
After a great start to the season, Daisi has now gone back to Austria for more training with Team Evolution to prepare for the English Championships which will be held in Bormio Italy in February.
