Date published: 01 March 2015

Rochdale Hornets progressed in the Ipro Sport Cup with an impressive display against South Wales Scorpions on a cold, wet, windy day at Spotland Stadium. Tries from Danny Bridge, Brad Hargreaves, Alex McClurg, Danny Yates, Dale Bloomfield, Jordan Case and Tony Suffolk, and six Paul Crook goals, gave Hornets a very comfortable victory.

Hornets opened the scoring within minutes of the kick off when, following a penalty, they went on the attack and Danny Bridge stormed over. Paul Crook converted.

Brad Hargreaves added a second try for Hornets - going over in the corner following a good passing move. Crook missed with his conversion attempt.

Scorpions Paul Emanuelli came close with a 40-20 kick, falling just a metre short.

Midway through the first half Hornets added a third try, Alex McClurg dived over from dummy half after Hornets had forced a penalty. Crook with the extras.

Approaching half time and Danny Yates kicked a 40-20. A handling error from the ensuing scrum let Scorpions off the hook.

There was still time for a fourth try before the break; Danny Yates with a superb dummy and run in from a scrum. Crook made it three out of four successful kicks, to give Hornets a comfortable half time lead.

Half time: Rochdale Hornets 22 - 0 South Wales Scorpions

Hornets started the second half as they did the first with a try within minutes of the kick off.

Dale Bloomfield over in the corner following a scrum. A superb kick by Crook to convert from the touch line.

Midway through the second half and with Hornets dominating, a mistake by Scorpions - a dropped ball - allowed Jordan Case to pounce for an easy try. Crook with the extras.

Scorpions did come close when a grubber kick for captain, Connor Farrer hit the post but Hornets full back Wayne English was quick to react and gather the ball.

With Scorpions visibly tiring, Hornets wrapped up the scoring when Tony Suffolk ran straight through the Scorpions defence to score under the posts. Easy kick for Crook.

Scorpions were outclassed and paid the price for a series of handling errors.

A dominant Hornets display which is sure to have pleased coach, Ian Talbot.
