Salpietro unbeaten century sees off Royton

Date published: 20 July 2015

One hundred and twenty runs in boundaries and a final score of 166 not out was the tally for Norden professional Daniel Salpietro in a match against Royton at Stag Park on Saturday.

Norden piled up 257 for four, and that after failing to score in the first three overs of the match.

Royton’s cause was not helped when key bowler Sam Fielding pulled up holding his side after only one delivery, and the rest of the attack suffered after 10 decent overs which cost them only 16 runs.

Salpietro reached his half century with a dink for two off Geeth Alwiss and at that stage Norden were 82-0 with 29 overs left.

Five runs later Simon Harman, on 30, tickled a delivery from Alwiss and was caught behind by Craig Joy.

Salpietro then started the real pounding and with 154 on the board he reached his century with a six launched towards the memorial gardens.

He and Ash Gowers featured in a partnership of 91 before Gowers fell to a good high-taken catch by Good, then Callum Porteous quickly collected another wicket when he trapped Rehan Udwadia leg before.

Simon North was caught on a return catch by Alwiss for four, but the last three overs brought 55 runs as Martin Smith slammed three sixes in a quickfire 22 to add to some late mayhem from Salpietro whose innings included 24 fours and four sixes.

The reply started badly as Zulfiqar went leg before to Chris Hartley with only four scored.
Alwiss was run out by Salpietro, Denny Hulme was caught by Salpietro and it was 28-3.
Maurice-Scott and Brown tried to pull the innings round and succeeded for a time as they took the score up to 79, but Maurice-Scott was then run out by a direct hit from Hartley.

Brown went on to score 68, but the innings tamely folded as Hartley returned to the attack to pick up three more wickets.
