Heywood destroy CLL champions Norden

Date published: 14 September 2015

Jack Morley produced an outstanding spell of bowling to destroy CLL champions Norden in their last match of the season.

Heywood’s 14-year-old starlet found the wicket at Bamford Fieldhouse to his liking and finished an unbroken spell with figures of 16.1-7-29-7.

Norden were all out for 107 and Heywood knocked them off for the loss of Rob Nicol who enjoyed one of his better innings of the season to run up 61. He was out with only two needed for a comprehensive victory.

Perhaps Norden realised it wasn’t going to be their day when Steve Pimm tried to swing a Simon Dawson delivery from leg, didn’t fully connect, and watched the ball roll slowly back onto the stumps to dislodge a bail.

It got worse for the Stags when Rehan Udwadia called Simon Harman for a quick run only for Harman to be run out by a direct hit from former Norden player Dominic Humphreys.

It was from then on that Morley took over.

With 42 on the board Ash Gowers was caught with a foot slightly off the ground and stumped by Dan Pawson to provide the lad with his first wicket.

Two runs later Greg Tattersall skied to be caught by Wes Hunt, then Daniel Salpietro was caught by Nicol.

Udwadia had scored a steady 25 when he snicked Morley into the slips for Nicol to take the catch, then Morley bowled both Martin Smith and Simon North.

Joe Lovell joined the party by having Adam Ahmed stumped and it was all out when Dan Buckley went in similar fashion to Pimm, the ball beating his defensive stance to roll onto the sticks.

Stags might well have still fancied themselves for a win in the knowledge that the club’s second team made a low score the weekend before and then went on to win on a similar wicket.

There was to be no repeat as Nicol and Bobby Cross picked off the bowling.

Nicol was the more aggressive and hammered five big sixes. He might have had another but, for what must have been the first ever time in a CLL match, his hit was ruled a dead ball after hitting power lines which run over the ground.

Only two runs were needed when Nicol holed out to Udwadia. The end came with the next ball when Pawson smacked North for four, and that was it, the end of the CLL for both teams.
