The Medicine Tap celebrates fifth anniversary

Date published: 30 March 2023

The Medicine Tap restaurant and bar in Rochdale town centre has celebrated its fifth anniversary.

The bar opened in March 2018 in the Grade-II listed former post office building on South Parade after an extensive restoration by John Stoner, who owns the Mighty Medicine Brewery in Whitworth.

The building itself was built in 1923 by the post service’s main architect, Sir Charles Wilkinson, and features a beautiful Baroque-style façade.

Many of the post office’s original features were retained, including the safe, post boxes, weighing scales and most of the oak panelling.

Caroline Norton Stoner, who runs the pub, said: “It’s been a rollercoaster five years to say the least, probably one of the most arduous and craziest times in hospitality but we’re incredibly proud to be part of Rochdale and we still believe in the magic of The Tap. A birthday party is definitely on the cards!

“Building a business isn’t without its difficulties. I remember when we first opened in 2018. It was a huge renovation and complete change of use from the former Post Office building to a quirky bar and restaurant. I think we expected a stampede of customers.

“In reality it was a challenge getting people to have even heard of The Medicine Tap or know where we were. The next stage was people knowing about us and intending to visit us and try the food. Now, five years on, so many people tell us how great the place is, what events they’ve celebrated with us and tell me their favourite dish.

“It honestly means the world. Thank you to all our customers for your support, please tell your friends about us. It’s the only way we can grow.”

Paul Ambrose, Rochdale Business Improvement District Manager, said: "I would like to congratulate John, Caroline and the team at the Medicine Tap on reaching this milestone. They have taken the venue from strength to strength, it makes an important to the local economy it is loved by the local community."
