Soap, soup, salvation… as well as great furniture!

Date published: 17 September 2012

Advertorial

When the Salvation Army first began its work amongst the poor and destitute of Whitechapel in London’s East End over 150 years ago, they offered ‘soap, soup and salvation’.

Now, at the Salvation Army Furniture Store on Haynes Street, they also offer great furniture plus a wide variety of household goods and bric-a-brac at extremely reasonable prices.

The store is well laid out on two floors and is divided into different departments. Their target customers are ordinary members of the public who don’t turn their noses up at the prospect of a good bargain.

The Store exists to provide funds to help in the Church’s outreach work amongst Rochdale’s poor and needy. In the words of Divisional Commander Mel Jones it is, “The Debenhams of charity shops.”

Since its earliest days working within the inner cities in the 1860s, The Salvation Army has always been a very practical church and has earned widespread respect and admiration for its work from Christians and non-Christians alike. It is often best known locally for its mission with the homeless and it was with regret that it was recently forced to close Providence House, its Rochdale Hostel.

Major Paul Wilson told us: “Providence House may have closed but our work continues.” He went on to say  there is still a great need for its food packs and the new store is heavily involved in providing the funds to support this. Since the shop opened in June, it has gone from strength to strength under its enthusiastic manager, Christine Murphy.

The shop’s focus is on good quality, pre-owned furniture but it also sells everything that you would expect to see in a more conventional charity shop. It has a clothing section, and also a good collection of electricals including white-goods and a variety of modern, flat-screen audio-visual equipment.

The best thing for customers is the prices. They aim to compare very favourably with charity shops and other retail outlets specialising in second-hand goods. We were very pleasantly surprised by both the quality and the low prices of the items on sale as well as by the wide range.

The store also sells CDs, DVDs and books; in fact, everything that you would expect to see in a shop selling household goods. Its stock is ever-changing and it pays to pop in every now and then in order to see what it has to offer. For a small donation, they even provide tea and coffee for  customers and a comfortable lounge and reception area so that you can take the weight off your feet as you shop.

The store is also very keen for people to donate goods so please think twice before you throw those old books in the skip. The store is not able to offer a repair service so does ask that any donated goods are of reasonable quality and in working order. They also request that any donated clothing is clean.

You can rest assured that your donated goods will be enthusiastically received and will help the Salvation Army to continue to deliver its services locally to those most in need.

The Store also offers a pick-up and delivery service.
