Rochdale Hornets news

Date published: 21 March 2014

Supporters Direct, the support body for supporter owned clubs, are hosting their first networking event of 2014 at the home of the first supporters owned professional rugby league club, Rochdale Hornets.

The event will take place from 7.00pm on Wednesday 9 April at Spotland Stadium and all members of the Hornets are invited to join members from Hunslet Hawks, Bramley Buffalos, Hemel Stags and the like for an informative and enjoyable evening.

Blake Solly from the RFL will be presenting full details of the restructure of the leagues and you have the chance first hand to raise any concerns or ask any questions.

You will also have the opportunity to hear what is going on at various other supporter owned rugby league clubs.

A full agenda is available upon request form Jacqui Forster at Supporters Direct, and she would be very grateful if you could let her know the names of those attending by Friday 4 April so that a room large enough to accommodate everyone with plenty of chairs and enough refreshments can be organised.

Heritage Funding draws to a close, but the project lives on

The initial funding received from the Heritage Lottery Fund has now all been spent and allocated and the club is looking for enthusiastic individuals who can spare some time to help preserve the club's heritage in the future.

The initial funding has allowed the club to create a mini museum at Spotland, alongside a work area, as well as start the archiving and storage of various items and create a timeline website.

Community manager Terri Davey is keen to here from any individuals who can spare time to continue the project on a voluntary basis.

The long term goal is to have a full functional heritage committee who raise funds to preserve and celebrate the clubs rich 142 year history.

Well done Hercules

Rochdale Hornets Ladies last weekend joined up with mascot Hercules the Hornet at Langtree Park Stadium, home of St Helen's RLFC, to take part in the GPW St Helen's 10K run fundraising for The Steve Prescott foundation.

The group of eight, many of whom had never attempted to run this kind of distance before, all signed up for the event after being inspired to raise money for such a great cause by coach David Ramsbottom, who also ran the course this year for the second time.

All of the Hornets contingent completed the course and have so far raised nearly £800 for the Steve Prescott Foundation. Donations haven’t been closed yet, if you would like to sponsor the Hornets 10k team, you can through the office or on:

Ryan and Sam inspire the local community

New arrivals Ryan and Sam have soon made themselves at home in the Rochdale Community.

This week they paid a visit to Norden Library and met children from Whittaker Moss on their first visit to the building to promote the importance of reading. The children sat and listened to stories on the carpet before questioning the players on their favourite books.

Senior Library and Information Assistant Angela Butcher commented: “Children from Whittaker Moss Class 2 were delighted to have two of Rochdale Hornet’s players, Sam Te’o and Ryan Millard, come in to see them on Monday 10 March; this coincided with a story time that Ray Stearn held for the children.

The players answered questions on what books they liked to read as children and what they like to read now (Harry Potter was a firm favourite). They encouraged the children to read lots of books.

The children were glad to receive signed prints of the players to take home.

Mrs Sinfield the teacher in charge of the class was very impressed with the Sam and Ryan and "their enthusiasm with the children".

Ryan Millard was also one of the guest speakers at Falinge High School where he joined Wheatsheaf Centre Manager and Hornets Board member Martin Ballard to present a motivational speech on gaining success in your career to over 200 Year 11 pupils.

Over the next few weeks Ryan and Sam will be out and about in schools including Brownhill and St Michael's as well as making guest appearances at a cooking event with Safeguard,  Norden Cricket Club Ground Force Day and starting the Stroke Association walk. Keep your eyes open when you’re out and feel free to come and say hello.
