Shopping centre to host Rio extravaganza

Date published: 30 July 2016

Shoppers are set to experience a taste of Rio this summer as a local shopping centre brings Rio to Rochdale in its Brazilian themed event.

On Saturday 6 August, the people of Rochdale are being invited to enjoy steel drums, carnival dancers, Brazilian mocktails and a themed photo booth, as Rochdale Exchange transforms into a free Rio carnival between 11am and 4pm.

Throughout the day, parents and their children will be able to enjoy free carnival mask making and Brazilian face painting, whilst shoppers can get involved in the Medal Winners Promotion to be in with a chance of winning fun prizes.

Lorenzo O’Reilly, Rochdale Exchange Shopping Centre Manager said he is looking forward to seeing everybody at the centre for the special Rio to Rochdale event. “The Rochdale community are going to have a fantastic time at our Rio themed event this summer,” he said. “Our Medal Winners promotion is an amazing way to get involved and win some great prizes from the stores at Rochdale Exchange.”

“All customers have to do is spend over £30 in any store at the centre and return their receipt to the event staff to be entered into gold, silver or bronze prize draw. The Revolution Radio street team will then announce the winners between 11am and 4pm.”

Rochdale Exchange have also teamed up with their on-site fitness centre, JD Gyms, to encourage its members to take part in the ‘JD Gyms Cycle Challenge’ in aid of Rochdale based campaign #TeamEllis. Starting on Monday, 1 August, gym-goers will be urged to join the gyms spin classes to help cycle almost 6000 miles from Rio to Rochdale.

“#TeamEllis is wonderful cause raising money for Ellis Robinson, who suffered serious injuries whilst playing football earlier this year, which left him paralysed from the chest down,” said Lorenzo. “Ellis had his heart set on playing football professionally and his family are now raising money to fund his recovery.”

“We thought the JD Gyms Cycle Challenge would be an excellent opportunity to raise funds and awareness for such an incredible cause and anybody wishing to take part, but is not a member of JD Gyms is welcome to come along to the Rio to Rochdale event on Saturday, 6 August, where the last few miles will be cycled on the mall,” Lorenzo added.
