Kingsway Park High School ask parents to be vigilant about children ‘sexting’

Date published: 27 April 2016

Parents are being asked by Kingsway Park High School to be extra vigilant and impress upon their children that ‘sexting’ may be common but is illegal.

‘Sexting’ is when someone sends or receives a sexually explicit text, image or video on their mobile phone, usually in a text message.

By sending an explicit image, a young person is producing and distributing child abuse images and risks being prosecuted, even if the picture is taken and shared with their permission.

The school advised parents that if they are concerned about their child sending inappropriate images to contact the school and they will be advised what to do.

Deborah Ball, Headteacher at Kingsway Park, said: “Unfortunately sexting is now an issue for all secondary schools and we take our responsibility for the safety of our students extremely seriously. Our work to educate students and their parents about the risks of sexting is part of a wider safeguarding strategy throughout the borough, with all agencies working together to share information and best practice to help protect our children and young people.”
