Hundreds turn out for 'Save Bamford' green belt ramble

Date published: 09 January 2017

Hundred of people turned out for the demonstration ramble on Saturday 7 January to save Bamford’s green belt, despite the heavy fog and rain.

The ramble began at 10.30am on the green opposite Tesco at Bamford precinct and continued around the perimeter of the football fields. The group continued along the land to be affected, down Jowkin Lane to Bamford Chapel, where refreshments were served.

A spokesperson for the Save Bamford green belt committee said: “The ramble was made up of residents, non-residents, councillors, Rochdale ramblers and the masses from Bridge FC.

“There were potentially a further 500 people on the football pitches, including parents, etc. There were ten football games being played concurrently as we passed.

“It was a fantastic turnout, a really good day and there’s been a massive buzz during and after the event.”

Under the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework proposals, land to the west of Norden Road could see up to 750 new homes built.

The consultation period has been extended to Monday 16 January. The second draft of the plan will be published in 2017 and there will be further consultation around this before the plan is submitted to the Secretary of State for independent examination in 2018.
