Chris Riley feels ‘right at home’ in new Middleton flat

Date published: 21 February 2017

Chris Riley, a vulnerable tenant who was sleeping on his dad’s sofa, is thrilled to be moving into his own flat.

Chris, 26, who has a mild learning disability as well as some physical disabilities, has lived with his dad for the past five years and was desperate to find his own place.

Chris said: “I wanted more independence and privacy so I could chill out at home and watch whatever I wanted on telly, but I still wanted to be near my family and friends.”

Rochdale Housing Initiative was struggling to find a suitable property for Chris, when housing association Contour Homes stepped in.

Contour’s Neighbourhood and Housing Options Teams worked together to find a suitable one-bedroom flat for Chris, close to Middleton town centre and just round the corner from his dad.

Chris added: “As soon as I walked in I loved it.

“Even though I haven’t moved in yet, I’ve been popping in every day to get things sorted.

“I went to Asda the other day to do a food shop, which I’ve never done before so I really enjoyed picking out my own food.

“One of the neighbours has already said if I need anything, I just need to ask, so I feel right at home.”

Chris was delighted to also receive B&Q vouchers from Contour to put towards decorating – and is hoping to move in next week once the final touches are in place.

Chris’ dad, Dave Riley, 47, said: “I know how much it means to him so Chris getting his own place is a big lift off my shoulders.

“I’ll miss having him around so I’m pleased he’s staying close by. I just can’t say thanks to Contour enough for what they’ve done. They’ve been a great help from start to finish.”

Neighbourhood officer Mark Crossley said: “It is humbling moments like this that make my role worthwhile.

"Most of our customers have a story to tell as to why they are in need of a home, but I think this will change Chris’s life more than most.”
