Heywood Girlguiding World Thinking Day

Date published: 21 February 2017

Girlguiding groups from Heywood Division, ranging from Rainbows to The Senior Section, joined with the Trefoil Guild at St Margaret’s school to celebrate World Thinking Day as one. This year’s celebrations focused on ‘growing’.

The focal point of the event featured a large jigsaw which each Unit in the Heywood Division was given a piece to paint which then came together on the night.

Katie Bevan, Senior Section Leader, also brought her own idea by providing a potted tree and each member of Girlguiding took turns in hanging paper hearts, each signed with one thing they love about guiding.

Other activities included several camp songs, a ‘Get To Know You’ bingo and a renewal of all Girlguiding promises for each section. Each member also donated a shiny 10p; these were collected at the end of the event and will be donated to the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS)

Rosa Curran and Marie Williamson made their Brownie Promise for the first time. Also, making their promise for the first time was 10-year-old Guide, Millie Barker-Gorse and several members of Heywood Senior Section.

Rosa, of 4th Heywood Brownies, said: “I was a little nervous at first, but I was surrounded by friends when I made my promise. I’ve had a lot of fun tonight, meeting new people and getting to know them.”

Division Commissioner, Alyson Quinn, said: ”The World Thinking Day is one event we can all get together as a Division. The young Rainbows get a chance to socialise with other members from the Senior Section and Trefoil Guild.”

22 February marks a special date on the Girlguiding calendar; World Thinking Day. On this special day, members of Girlguiding will think about sister Guides all around the world, the meaning of Guiding and the global impact the leading charity has. This particular date was chosen as it marks the birthdays of Guiding and Scouting founders; Robert Baden-Powell and Olave Baden-Powell.
