Tunshill Golf Club targeted by vandals

Date published: 13 January 2016

Tunshill Golf Club in Milnrow has been vandalised after chemicals were poured onto greens and tees.

The club has put out a passionate plea asking those who are responsible to “stop before your actions go too far”.

The plea reads: “This is a plea from the members of Tunshill Golf Club, to the person or persons who are systematically vandalising our golf course.

"Please, enough is enough. Whatever grievance you have with Tunshill Golf Club, please take it up with officials of the club and leave the course alone.

“The implications of what you are doing could go a lot further than just trying to punish a golf club. The chemicals you are putting on the golf course, along with the drainage and the very heavy rains we are experiencing, could wash those chemicals into the local streams, which in turn could have an impact on local wildlife and water supplies. So although you think you are just damaging the golf club, your actions go a lot further than you think.

“You are also taking away a communal sports facility that supports the community of Milnrow. It has a fantastic junior section and gives a lot of pleasure to the people of Milnrow and beyond.

“Please whoever you are, sit down and talk or just stop before your actions go too far. Somebody knows who these people are. The police are involved, but as we know they have limited resources.”

It is understood that the attacks started in October 2015 when one of the tees and two greens on the course were targeted. This damage alone lead to a £7,000 repair.

A second attack took place over the weekend (Saturday 9 January and Sunday 10 January) in which three further greens were targeted.

The chemicals being used as part of the attacks are suspected to be an oil or paint-based mix.

Police have been informed about the incidents.
