Date published: 04 February 2016

A taxi driver suffered “serious and possibly life changing” injuries after misfortune saw him caught up in a police chase with a Transit van.

The driver, who wishes to remain anonymous, was caught up in the failed-to-stop collision between police officers and the van at the junction of Bentley Street and Whitworth Road on Sunday 24 January, before the occupants fled the scene.

The driver is still in hospital suffering from amnesia, a broken bone in the lower back, and a severely fractured right shoulder blade.

A relative of the driver said: “He can’t remember the incident, he is struggling to remember a lot of things. This has been quite stressful for us as a family. At the moment he is still in hospital.

“The police haven’t been very forthcoming about this whole thing, they haven’t found the people responsible yet, but I hope that they do, because this is quite serious”.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed that the Ford Transit was recovered from the scene but enquires are ongoing to trace the driver.

The police are appealing for witnesses to the collision or anyone who saw the Ford Transit in the Falinge area just prior to the collision. They are also appealing to the occupants of the vehicle to come forward and speak to the police.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
