Police called to men behaving aggressively towards a young woman in town

Date published: 04 February 2016

Police were called to Baillie Street after reports that two men were behaving aggressively towards a young woman and had been pushing her around Baillie Street and Yorkshire Street whilst shouting profanities amidst lunchtime (Wednesday 4 February) shoppers.

A member of staff from one store came outside to help but was met with aggression and went back indoors.

A witness, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “It was awful, the entire street sort of fell silent while he was screaming at her and pushing her around.

“A woman came out to try and get them to move on and he turned on her as well.

"To be fair it didn’t take long for the police to turn up, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I realised how many cars and vans were there. They are really on the ball”.

Another witness said: “It was pretty disgusting. There were kids everywhere and it wasn’t pleasant for them to watch.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said that the woman fled the scene. He added: “Police were called to Baillie Street, Rochdale, at 13.15 after reports that two men had been pushing a woman around the street. The woman fled the scene so police officers were unable to proceed with anything, but if she decided to come forward then necessary action could be taken.”

“CCTV was being checked, and there are currently no witnesses.”
