Lib Dems to oppose Coral Mill application

Date published: 12 April 2016

Milnrow and Newhey Lib Dems will formally object to Countryside Properties application to build 69 new houses on the site of Coral Mill in Newhey.

Councillor Andy Kelly and Irene Davidson claim they are not opposed to the site being developed but can't support the application in its current form. They have accused the developers being interested in 'making as much money as possible' and have 'little interest in Newhey.

Councillor Kelly said: "Everyone knows that the site needs to be developed. It's been a blight on the Newhey community for years. It's our view that the application in its current form will exacerbate the existing parking problems suffered by Newhey residents.

"At no point does it address this, at no point does it acknowledge the effect that such a big development will have on our local amenities and we believe that 69 rental properties is not in the best interests of the Newhey Community.

"I think permission for this development must be based on these and other points. We would be happy to look again at any application in the future but can't support it in its current form."

Irene Davidson said: "Residents have been in touch to say that they are not against Coral Mill being developed.

“The developers need to work with the Newhey community to find a solution that benefits everybody.

“There is no attempt by the developer to try and contribute to the betterment of the Newhey Community.

“We would like the developer to acknowledge this in their application and for the council to consider imposing a Section 106 order to force the developer to make a financial contribution to easing any parking problems that residents currently face."
