Elderly lady fights off carjacker on Aldi carpark

Date published: 20 May 2016

A courageous pensioner fought off a carjacker on an Aldi car park.

The 74-year-old lady was stunned when a man forced his way into her vehicle at the Entwisle Road supermarket on Thursday lunchtime, trying to rip the keys from her hand before walking around the other side of the car to try and pull her out.

The elderly lady, who prefers not to be named, managed to swing the door open just in time to prevent him from reaching her and screamed for help. The man tried to flee the scene but was caught by witnesses who restrained him until the police arrived.

A police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 11.35am on Thursday 19 May 2016, police were called to Aldi on Entwisle Road to a report a woman had been the victim of a carjacking.

“Officers attended and discovered a man had jumped into the car of a 74-year-old woman, whilst she was sitting in it. He tried to grab the keys and a struggle ensued, but the woman shouted for help and members of the public heard and detained the offender.”

Greater Manchester Police has subsequently confirmed that a Rochdale man has been charged with attempted robbery and remanded to appear before Bury and Rochdale Magistrates Court today, Friday 20 May.
