Local runners take part in Greater Manchester 10k run

Date published: 23 May 2016

Thousands of pounds have been raised for various local charities, as runners from across the borough took part in the Greater Manchester 10k run on Sunday (22 May).

Heywood and Middleton MP Liz McInnes was among the runners as she took on the challenge for the seventh time, this time raising £620 for the Springhill Hospice.

She said: “I've taken part in the Manchester 10K since 2009, never breaking any running records but each time raising money for a different charity.
It's a great event to take part in with the added bonus of helping a local charity. This year I've chosen Springhill Hospice in Rochdale which gives specialist palliative care to patients and their families from diagnosis to end of life.

“An amazing 70% of their running costs come from fundraising through the local community so I'm hoping that you'll dig deep and make a donation to help keep this fantastic local facility going.”

Owner of The Baum pub Simon Crompton, raised £690 for the Springhill Hospice. Having taken on his first ever 10k run, he finished in 55minutes and 40 seconds.

He said: “It was a great day, absolutely buzzing. I think my time isn’t too bad for my first ever 10k run. Thanks to everyone who donated.”

Councillor Chris Furlong raised £490 for the St Vincent De Paul Society. He said: “I did it. Completed it in 1 hour 7 minutes and 2 seconds. This took 17 minutes and 55 seconds off my previous best. This despite falling over round the corner from Old Trafford - though I did get a rousing cheer from the United faithful when I got back up and carried on running.

“So one smashed iPod, a cut leg, knee and hand and a set of bruised ribs couldn't stop me beating my personal best.

"A huge thank you for all who have sponsored me and wished me luck."

Keith Trinnaman, a member of the Middleton Rotary Club, raised £330 for the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital.

He said: “Great day in Manchester, completed the run un just under 59 minutes and have so far raised over £330 for Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. Thanks to everyone who supported and donated, you really are special people.

“I have run for RMCH for the last two years now and do so because the hospital provide excellent care and support for the children that are unfortunate enough to have to attend the hospital. The facilities at the hospital are excellent and with your help we can make them even better.”

Azeem Amir said: “I had an amazing day yesterday, it was absolute quality.

“We set off early yesterday because I was one of 2 blind runners out of over 40,000 doing the run yesterday and me and my guide Sam Hinchliffe my ex PE teacher got around the course in 56 minutes achieving our aim of doing it under an hour.

“It was probably one of the toughest challenges I had ever set myself and my preparation wasn’t the best due to my exams and football season coming to an end but with Sam’s motivation and the amazing support I got from my family, who came down in force with beautiful banners, my football club and my old PE teachers from Matthew Moss, who all came down to support me it ended up being a great day.

“We have raised over 1,400 pounds and hoping by the end of the week to reach at least 2,000 plus.”
