Thousands turn out for Heywood 1940s Day

Thousands of people lined the streets of Heywood for the annual Heywood 1940s Day with hundreds dressing the part in 1940s clothing - it seemed the whole town had turned out for the day.

The Armed Forces paraded, and amongst other attractions was Backstep Boogie Dancers, an air raid shelter at Tillys Tea Room, an encampment on Hill Street, tanks, jeeps and trucks, a Spitfire, Hurricane and Messerschmitt, Naafi, Battle of the Somme activity, live entertainment at Heywood Magic Market, a tea dance at James Church Hall, vintage carousel, miniature train and 1940s entertainment in front of St Luke's Church.

Councillor Peter Rush said: "A fantastic turn out for a fantastic day. The whole community has got involved, including lots of Heywood businesses."

Leader of the Council, Councillor Richard Farnell said: "Heywood has pulled off another cracking event with thousands flocking to the town for an action-packed 40s day.

"All credit to the hard work put in by the hundreds of volunteers who made the day so memorable and helped raise thousands for charity."
