Local Momentum react to election of Jeremy Corbyn

Date published: 27 September 2016

Members of Momentum Rochdale, Heywood & Middleton have welcomed the election of Jeremy Corbyn as leader of the Labour Party with 62% of the vote.

Mr Corbyn was the clear preference of voters – in all three categories of members, registered supporters, and affiliated supporters.

A spokesperson for Momentum Rochdale, Heywood & Middleton said: "Rochdale Borough Council is currently considering how to make further cuts to vital public services as a result of the Tory government's failed economic policies.

"A strong Labour party supporting Jeremy Corbyn's policies, such as his 10 pledges, is therefore vital for local people.

"We call on members of the Parliamentary Labour Party to rejoin the fold in our continued fight against the divisive and harmful policies pursued by the Tory government.

"We also look forward to working with fellow party members who may be disappointed in the election result in our common objective to create a fairer society for us all."
