Liz McInnes confirms support for Jeremy Corbyn

Date published: 29 September 2016

Liz McInnes, MP for Heywood and Middleton, has said she will support Jeremy Corbyn following his re-election as Leader of the Labour Party.

Ms McInnes said: "Jeremy Corbyn has been re-elected as Labour leader by a majority of members, supporters and affiliate members and I congratulate him on his re-election.

"As I made clear at the start of the summer, I was against the vote of no confidence in Jeremy, because I believed it was wrong for Labour to turn inwards and attack ourselves following the Brexit vote and resignation of the Prime Minister.

"However, many will know that I campaigned for Owen Smith and I did so because I thought he was the best candidate to take the Labour Party forward in unity at this difficult and uncertain time for our country.

"I regret that we have spent the summer occupying ourselves with yet another leadership election, and now it is over it is vital that all Labour members get on with the task at hand – exposing the failing policies of the Tory government and presenting an alternative vision to the country, so that we can have the Labour government that millions of people so desperately need. We can only win if we are united.

"I supported Jeremy when he was first elected leader and I will do so again, and I call on all Labour members to support one another and to support our leader."
