CPS to take no further action against Simon Danczuk in relation to rape allegations

Date published: 04 October 2016

No further action will be taken against Rochdale MP Simon Danczuk in connection with a historic rape allegation.

A CPS spokesperson said: “Following receipt of a file from Lancashire Police in relation to Operation Lotus the evidence was considered by a specialist prosecutor in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors. It has been decided that there is insufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction.”

"The complainant has been informed and we have written to her to fully explain our decision.”

Speaking to Rochdale Online, the complainant said: "I am extremely disappointed and very upset at the CPS decision."

Mr Danczuk issued the following statement through his solicitors...

"I am grateful for the decision made by the CPS and I am relieved that the investigation has now come to an end.

"Even though I maintained my innocence throughout, this has been an immensely stressful period for me and my family. I thank them for their continuing support.

"I would also like to thank my solicitor, Alex Preston, constituents who have been very understanding and to local Labour Party members who have supported me throughout.

"I now expect the Labour Party to conclude their investigation into these matters and lift my suspension as soon as possible."

However, it is understood Mr Danczuk's suspension was due to sending sex messages to a 17-year-old girl.
