Remembrance Day Parades & Services

Date published: 31 October 2016

Commemorations will be held on Remembrance Sunday 13 November, with six parades across the borough and on Friday 11 November at Rochdale Cenotaph.

Representatives from the Navy, Army and Royal Air Force will join veterans and civic dignitaries for the parades, which will take place in Rochdale, Heywood, Littleborough, Middleton, Milnrow and Wardle.

Members of the public are invited to attend to show their gratitude to servicemen and women.

Mayor Ray Dutton, said: “Remembrance Sunday is a very important day for me and our residents, when we come together to honour the brave men and women who have died in the service of their country. Our borough is very proud of our strong links with the armed forces and I invite all members of the community to attend their local service. We owe our service personnel a great debt and I do hope residents will come out again to pay their respects to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.”

And at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month (Friday 11 November) the Mayor will lead a two-minute silence, with prayers given by Reverend Canon Shackleton, at the town’s war memorial opposite Rochdale Town Hall on The Esplanade.

Councillor Alan McCarthy, lead member for the Armed Forces, said the Legion does fantastic work and is encouraging everyone to wear their poppy with pride: “Remembrance Day is about paying tribute not only to those who died but also to their families, those who were injured and those who survived. The message of remembrance needs to be passed on to future generations so by buying a poppy we pay a fitting tribute to all those brave men and women who served, and continue to serve our country.”
