Remembrance Day service at Rochdale Cenotaph

The public joined representatives from the Navy, Army, and Royal Air Force in paying tribute to fallen soldiers at Rochdale Cenotaph on Friday morning at a Remembrance Day service at Rochdale Cenotaph.

Flag bearers stood to attention as ex-servicemen, alongside Mayor and Mayoress Dutton, made their way from the Town Hall to the Cenotaph, to the poignant ‘Last Post’.

At the 11th hour, a two-minute silence took place, commemorating those who gave their lives fighting for our country.

Reverend Canon Shackleton led prayers on The Esplanade, and the Lord’s Prayer was said in unison in front of the Cenotaph.

Mayor Ray Dutton paid his respects before being joined by pupils from Milnrow CofE and Beech House primary schools in the laying of wreaths.

The national anthem was then led by Town Centre chaplain, Reverend Margaret Smith, who closed the ceremony with her blessing and invited the public back to the Town Hall for refreshments.

Friday marks the beginning of several memorial services taking place across the borough over the weekend, with parades in Heywood, Littleborough, Milnrow, and Middleton scheduled for Sunday (13 November).
