Hundreds of people paid their respects to those who died serving their country at Remembrance Sunday service in the Memorial Gardens in Heywood (Sunday 13 November).

Blackley band provided the music for the hymns and the bugler for the Last Post.

The two minutes’ silence was solemnly observed before wreaths were laid by the military, veterans, Deputy Mayor Ian Duckworth, local councillors, local churches, schools, beaver groups, girl guides, the emergency services and many other local groups.

Councillor Alan McCarthy, Rochdale Borough Council Lead Member for Armed Forces, said after the service: “It has been an excellent turnout again and an excellent day.”

Deputy Mayor Ian Duckworth said: “I’m amazed at the crowds. The youngsters did very well. It is rather comforting that the attendance at these events is increasing.

"My grandfather fought in the First World War and died after being gassed so it is important to me that we remember.

"I am overwhelmed by the number of people here today."
