Remembrance Day at St Cuthbert's RC High School

Date published: 17 November 2016

Remembrance Day Parade

Pupils and staff felt silent in school at 11.11 am on Friday 11 November, Armistice Day, to hear the Last Post played by Mr Turner and Amy Hardman-Elliott, followed by a minute's silence to honour those who have died in war and conflict across the world for our freedom.

On Remembrance Sunday, two of our Year 11 pupils, David Atkinson and Kieran Joy, played a key part in Rochdale's Service of Remembrance at the cenotaph in the town centre.

They were invited by the Mayor to carry our large St Cuthbert's poppy and lead himself, Members of Parliament, local councillors and representatives of the Armed Forces, Police, Fire and Ambulance Services out from the Town Hall and across the Esplanade to the cenotaph to begin the Service of Remembrance.

After all the other dignitaries had placed their wreaths, David and Kieran very reverently placed our poppy at the centre of the war memorial.

We were delighted to see several other St Cuthbert's pupils involved in march past with Cadets, Scouts or Guides or taking part in the service with their family and friends.

We are very proud of the conduct of all our pupils who took part in the Service of Remembrance and were wonderful ambassadors for our school.

Deputy Chair of Governors Mrs Kathleen Nickson, member of staff Cameron Jones and Lay Chaplain Kathryn Ansley were in attendance to support our pupils.

In addition, Mr Smith, English teacher at St. Cuthbert’s lead the staff prayers this week. We remembered a local man from Royton, Thomas Holden who fought for our country. Prayers were said by all staff as we remembered the war dead and their families.

Expressive Arts stars of the week:

Joe Mulkeen for stunning pattern work in Art. Amy-Hardman Elliot for overcoming her nerves to play 'The Last Post' on Remembrance Day. Holly Bardason for creating a challenging character in Drama, Cole Brierley for being kind and thoughtful in group work in Drama.

Specialisms News: LINC:

This week we welcomed St Gabriel’s R.C. Primary School to the LINC. The pupils were eager to use the IT rich facilities we have on offer and couldn’t wait to get started with their next promotional project. Mr Brown had a busier than normal morning as screen shots of the primary school building, members of staff and website pictures were needed as well as the photographs brought in from school.

All of these efforts paid off and the students produced some terrific publications. The work was saved electronically on the spot, as Mrs Cairns was keen to make some finishing touches when the pupils next have their IT Lesson. Well done St. Gabriel’s we look forward to seeing you again in February for your final Creative Media lesson.

Drama: Pupils in Yr8, 9 and 10 were thoroughly entertained by the Arden Theatre School's modern day adaptation of Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet'. The performance used a modern day setting and costumes alongside the original Shakespearean language to create a vibrant piece that kept pupils on the edge of their seats.

Music: The show band have been busy rehearsing Queen songs for the production of 'We Will Rock You' in December. The guitar solos are a real highlight and keeping our guitarists very busy.

Health and Social: Yr 11 pupils have been attending intervention sessions on Tuesdays after school in order to improve their controlled assessment work and prepare for the exam.

Art: Yr 9 pupils are racing ahead with their artist research on practitioners such as Alfred Basha. This will inform their practical work and act as inspiration for ideas.
