St Cuthbert's raise £1,815 for Mary’s Meals

Date published: 19 December 2016

Mary’s Meals Running Total

We are absolutely staggered at the amount of money that has been raised for Mary’s Meals. As of Tuesday 13 December (with 3 more days to go), the staff and students have raised a massive £1,815. Mary’s meals is a charity that aims to feed students in schools who may not receive a meal each day.

It costs just £12.20 to feed a child for a whole year, which means we have managed to feed 148 children so far. Thank you to the generous community of St. Cuthbert’s for your fantastic fundraising efforts.

PE News

On Sunday 4 December, 4 of our pupils competed in the North West Trampoline Championships against 120 other Gymnasts. Ellie Bullock (year 9), Chloe Mason (year 8), Savana Turner (year 8) and Niamh Matthew (year 7) have been working extremely hard in the run up to the competition, practicing their routines 3 times a week during their lunch times and after school.

All of the girls completed both routines all the way through and completed them to a very high standard. As a result, the girls came 5th out of 30 other teams in their age category, which is an amazing achievement considering two of the girls had never competed before.

A particular well done to Ellie Bullock who scored high 7's in both her routines and came 3rd individually. Ellie is now training hard for the zonal round where she will be competing against the best trampolinists in the North of England. The girls have worked so hard over the past few months. Good luck to Ellie as she competes in the Zonal round on the 4 February.

Expressive Arts News Stars of the week:

Abigail Kelly for stunning blending in Art.
Tiegan Goodall for excellent keyboard skills.
Joshua Ormerod for his fantastic efforts in drama this term.
Lucy Wainwright for her excellent work with Yr 7.

Stacey Openshaw in year 11 has made a massive effort in her Art lessons this this term and has consistently pushed herself to keep developing and improving her work. This week Stacey has been working on her final piece for her Henna themed project and has produced some inspired card constructions as a frame around her detailed drawings.

Specialisms News:

The Expressive Arts department have been extremely busy this week as it is once again school production time! Pupils came in last Sunday for a dress and technical rehearsal and are performing to full houses each night this week. There are over 60 pupils involved in both performing and as part of the backstage team.

Music Department Update:

St Cuthbert's GCSE Musicians Clayton Sedgwick (Drums), Louis Grayson (Lead Electric Guitar) and Callum Edwards (Rhythm Electric Guitar) have really risen to the occasion by performing superbly in the show band for this year's school production of We Will Rock You. This has been a mammoth undertaking for all three students, as they have had to learn over 20 separate Queen Songs in just two months. Keep a close eye on these three up-and-coming musicians in future St Cuthbert's productions, as they are becoming true professionals.

Year 7 musicians are putting their new music reading and writing skills into practice by performing Christmas music including Jingle bells and Rudolph the red nosed reindeer on the keyboards.

Year 8 musicians are putting the finishing touches to their Movie Music performance pieces ready for their upcoming performance assessments when we return in January.

Year 9 GCSE Musicians have been practicing their class band arrangement of John legend's All of Me, and practicing using Italian terms to describe the elements of music.

Year 10 GCSE Musicians are refining their first compositions, for which they have been following a brief set by the exam board to write in a particular style or for a specific purpose.
Year 11 GCSE Musicians are finishing their mock composition appraisals and preparing for their final performance exams when we return in January.

Art: Year 11 are putting their final touches to controlled assessment work for this term. All pupils are welcome at the Art Barn at lunchtime and after school.

Drama: KS4 students have been working with Yrs 7 and 8 this week in Drama. They have been exploring a modern day version of Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol'. Mrs Knox and Mrs Maloney have been really impressed with the leadership skills demonstrated by the older pupils and the positive responses they elicited from the younger students.
Pupils in Computer Science have been participating in group work to understand their understanding of coding. Pupils identified their favourite activity as charades as it was fun and they felt that they learnt something useful.

In Technology Yr 11 pupils have been completing their written and practical controlled assessments. Many pupils have been coming back at lunchtimes and after school to access help from Mrs Rothwell and Mr Jones.

In Media Studies Yr 10 students have been completing their double page spreads for controlled assessment. Mrs Maloney has been thrilled by the professional finish that the students have produced. This work would not look out of place in a real magazine.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Thisweek we have had many opportunities to celebrate Christmas as a year group. On Thursday, students attended Christmas liturgies which were delivered by our pupil chaplains; Viviana and Giovanni Ripa, Princia Rose, Matthew Whitworth, Emma Waldie and Ellie McCole.

On Friday, all students attended a rewards assembly with their year group and head of Year. We celebrated those who had 100% attendance, improved behaviour, form tutor awards and head of year awards. Needless to say, there was lots of chocolate involved.

We would like to wish all of our families a safe and happy and Holy Christmas and we look forward to welcoming our staff and students back in the New Year. The new term starts on Tuesday 3 January 2017.
