Anger at more fly-tipping

Date published: 28 December 2016

Yet more fly-tipping has occurred, with a large number of items being dumped near Lobden Golf Club on Whitworth Rake on Wednesday (28 December) - in addition to waste that has been present since the end of November.

The items, which include a fridge, black bin bags, toys and various office equipment, have been dumped on the same day the Friends of Ashworth Valley appealed for help to clear tipping near Ashworth Fold, and just days after several rubbish bags were left at the top of The Walk in Rochdale.

Phil Watson said: “Unfortunately, it appears to be a growing problem and left by people who clearly do not care about our moorland or those that inhabit it. It certainly wasn't there yesterday when I walked the dogs around lunchtime, but was this morning at about 9am. As the golf club is nearby, hopefully there will be some CCTV footage to help identify the culprits.”

Keith Haycox said: “Lazy bone idle scum. No respect for anything or anyone outside their miserable lives. The tip at Rochdale was open on Boxing Day when I took a load of boxes and paper down. It was very busy but it was probably more of an effort to dump this lot in the countryside than to take it to the tip.”

The waste has been reported to Rossendale Borough Council by Angie McCormack, who also reported the waste left in November, around '200 yards away'.

She said: "Both of these make recreational activities more risky. They are on a bridleway and here has been at least one incident from this tipping where a horse was spooked by the rubbish and the rider fell off.

"Lobden appears to be a hotspot for tipping. Members of the Keep Whitworth Tidy group have spent time litter picking up there and it is so frustrating when this then happens. Many people walk up there, ride bikes and horses, and admire wildlife, as well as play golf but sadly the fly tipping spoils it."
