Eamonn Boylan recommended as Greater Manchester Combined Authority Chief Executive

Eamonn Boylan will be recommended as Chief Executive of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA).

Following an appointment process, the GMCA Resources Committee will recommend his appointment to the full Greater Manchester Combined Authority on Friday 27 January.

Mr Boylan began his career in the housing sector, rising to Assistant Director with Manchester Housing in 1995, then becoming Executive Director of Housing and Operational Services with Sheffield City Council in 1997. He joined Manchester City Council in 1999 and rose to become Deputy Chief Executive, leaving in 2008 to join the Housing and Communities Agency (HCA) as Deputy Chief Executive. He is currently Chief Executive of Stockport MBC and has held the top post since 2010. As part of his current role he also leads on housing, planning and investment within Greater Manchester.

Subject to GMCA approval, Mr Boylan will become the first GMCA full time Chief Executive. He will succeed Sir Howard Bernstein who has combined the role of GMCA Head of Paid Service with his role as Manchester City Council Chief Executive.

“I have no doubt that with Eamonn’s skills and drive we will deliver our strategy for Greater Manchester and move us closer to becoming one of the world's best city-regions.”

Eamonn Boylan added: “Greater Manchester is a fantastic place and I’ve been privileged to work here for most of my career. To now take on the role of GMCA Chief Executive at this pivotal moment for our city-region is a great honour.

“I understand the ambition and optimism of Greater Manchester and look forward to working with the Mayor and Leaders to ensure everyone in GM benefits from our shared success.”

Subject to approval by the GMCA, it is expected that Mr Boylan will take up the GMCA Chief Executive position in Spring 2017.
