Taxi driver calls for action against youths throwing stones

Date published: 29 March 2017

Taxi driver Imran Syed is calling for ‘careful consideration’ of ‘anti-social behaviour’ from youths who have repeatedly thrown stones at cars on Oldham Road since November.

Mr Syed said: “I have been the victim of anti-social behaviour on a number of occasions when travelling on Oldham Road towards my house. A gang of lads throw stones at cars, taxis and buses. They could cause a major accident.

“They have caused damage to my taxi, and cost me substantial loss of earnings. It is my business where I earn a living for my family.”

Mr Syed, from Rochdale, reported has twice reported incidents to Greater Manchester Police after his taxi was damaged, but says the problem is not going away.

He added: “This is a very serious series of repeated incidents. Even last week, kids are still throwing stones at motorists. The police told me the council has no funds to put CCTV in place.”

Mark Dalzell, Rochdale Borough Council head of neighbourhood services, said: “The council is aware of a complaint regarding anti-social behaviour on Oldham Road, Rochdale and are working with our partners and local residents to find a solution.”

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: “Police were called to reports of damage to a vehicle on Oldham Road, Rochdale.

“An investigation was launched and anyone with information should contact police on 101 quoting reference number 1910 of 10/11/16 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”
