Liz McInnes pledges support for school leaders’ campaign against cuts

Date published: 30 May 2017

Liz McInnes, Labour candidate for Heywood and Middleton in the general election on 8 June, has pledged her support for school leaders’ top priorities for education, including an end to cuts proposed by the Conservatives.

Ms McInnes has signed up to the five priorities campaign led by the the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT), a professional association and trade union for school leaders. The top priority for head teachers is a commitment to reverse the real terms cuts schools are facing, and Liz has given local schools her full support.

Ms McInnes said: "In recent months I have been contacted by many local head teachers who are desperately worried about the impact of changes to the funding formula on their schools. The figures produced by the NAHT, which represents head teachers, show that local schools are at risk of losing teachers because of Tory cuts. Parents can see the data for themselves at schoolcuts.org.uk.

"Our schools deserve better, and I won't stand idly by while our children's future is treated so recklessly by the Tory government. I am happy to back school leaders in their campaign for fair funding and I fully support their five priorities for education."

Russell Hobby, general secretary of school leaders’ union NAHT said: "School leaders are clear that they want the next government to focus on the top priorities within education.

"We need a clear focus on getting the basics right: enough money, a supply of well-qualified teachers, a broad curriculum, support to care for a child’s mental and physical wellbeing, and an accountability system that is fair to both schools and pupils. We welcome the support Liz McInnes has given to these key priorities and to schools in her local area.

"We urge all candidates to sign up to our campaign so the voice of school leaders is heard loud and clear in the next parliament."
