Body found in canal

A body has been found in Rochdale Canal on Tuesday (25 July).

An eyewitness confirmed the area has been sealed off and reported seeing fire and police in attendance near the Wellfield Health Centre.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue said: “We were called at 10.01 am to reports of a person in the water in the canal on Oldham Road.

“We attended with two pumps from Rochdale and Littleborough and a water rescue unit from Heywood.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "Police were called at around 10.10am to reports that a body had been found in the canal near to Oldham Road, Rochdale.

"Officers and search teams are at the scene and the body of a man has been recovered from the canal.

"Enquiries into the man’s death are ongoing at this time and anyone with information should contact 101 quoting 607 of 25/07/17 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111."
