Turner Brothers Asbestos - airborne asbestos test results to be discussed at public meeting

Date published: 25 September 2017

A meeting regarding the results of Rochdale Borough Council’s air monitoring test at the former Turner Brothers Asbestos (TBA) site will take place at the Spotland and Falinge area forum at 7pm on Monday (2 October).

The meeting, at Spotland Methodist Church, will only cover the council’s air monitoring programme, which took place earlier this year.

Results of the geophysical land survey are still yet to be announced.

Following a drop-in session in September 2016, the geophysical survey was due to commence in October testing for slope stability, presence of asbestos in shallow and deep soil, sampling ground water and sampling surface water from the River Spodden where it enters and leaves the site, measuring for dust and fibres in the air, and, under industry requirements, checking for heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, semi-volatile organic compounds and oils.

The survey, which was carried out by environmental consultants RSK on behalf of the British Virgin Islands-based owners, actually began in November 2016. Expected to take place for three weeks, the survey went on for four months until it was completed in March this year.

A published report detailing the full findings of the investigation has been pledged, but - six months later - no date has yet been provided.

The former TBA site was sold in 2004 to a Jersey based company. According to Land Registry files, ownership was later transferred to another offshore company, Renshaw Properties based in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), a tax haven, normally outside the jurisdiction of English courts. BVI company law currently does not require the names of directors and shareholders to be published.
