Police supporting Greater Manchester Remembrance Sunday parades despite nationwide withdrawals
Date published: 27 October 2017
A number of Remembrance Day parades across the country have faced criticism as police have withdrawn their support ‘due to government cuts’.
Road closures have been the responsibility of local authorities since a change in the law in 2004, but police have generally continued to help run the parades.
Volunteers in Leicestershire, are fighting to raise funds to hire professional traffic management firms for their parade, whilst police have also withdrawn their support from numerous Remembrance parades across the West Midlands and Nottinghamshire.
However, the Remembrance Sunday parades across Rochdale and Greater Manchester are expected to go ahead as planned.
At Greater Manchester Police’s Chief Superintendent, John O’Hare, said: “At GMP we fully understand the importance of these events. We are committed to working closely with all our local communities to ensure our Remembrance Day parades and memorials can take place safely, in a dignified and respectful manner.”
