Next Mayor of Rochdale nominated

Date published: 16 February 2018

Councillor Mohammed Zaman has been nominated as Mayor of Rochdale for the 2018/19 municipal year.

The decision was taken at Wednesday’s full council meeting at Rochdale Town Hall.

Councillor Zaman, who has represented the Milkstone and Deeplish ward since 2011, currently serves as Deputy Mayor of Rochdale.

Councillor Zaman said: “I am really looking forward to making a positive difference, supporting our many diverse and vibrant communities.

“It is a real honour to be following in the footsteps of so many great mayors. I can not wait to get started, working with voluntary and community organisations across the borough. Thanks to everyone who has put their trust in me.”

The new Deputy Mayor of Rochdale will be Councillor Billy Sheerin, who has represented the Castleton ward since 2012, and is currently assistant cabinet member for adult care.

Councillor Sheerin said: “I am really humbled to have been nominated for this important civic position. I will do my very best to support the work of the Mayor. A huge thanks for the many kind words and good wishes I have had since my appointment.”

The new Mayor and Deputy Mayor will take up their positions in May, following a special mayor making ceremony at Rochdale Town Hall.
