Pupils of Milnrow Parish commemorate Remembrance Day

Date published: 19 November 2019

Pupils of Milnrow Parish CE Primary School commemorated Remembrance Day at St James’ Church on Monday 11 November.

The whole school visited the newly refurbished War Memorial at the Milnrow church as this year’s act of Remembrance.

Just before 11am, Milnrow Parish went to the St James’ War Memorial, where they were joined by members of the school’s governing board, paying their respects by observing a two-minute silence and listened to a sounding of ‘The Last Post.’

The pupils had learnt about a fallen soldier who is commemorated on a gravestone at St James’ Church. They spent time studying the heroes using the book ‘Not Forgotten: Milnrow and District Fallen Heroes of the First World War’ by Ralph Davidson.

By creating fact files, family trees, letters home and diary entries, the pupils were able to appreciate the veterans and fully understand the meaning behind Remembrance Day.

After the moment of silence, the children laid down their handmade wreaths that they had done in class.

A teacher at Milnrow Parish Primary said: “The pupils were impeccable in how they showed respect for these men of Milnrow who made the ultimate sacrifice.”

Observed by Commonwealth countries, Remembrance Day, also known as Armistice Day, marks the day when World War One ended: at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.
