Mayor Billy Sheerin and Mayoress Lynn Sheerin lay a Remembrance wreath at Rochdale Cenotaph
The Mayor and Mayoress of Rochdale, Councillor Billy Sheerin and his wife Lynn, laid wreaths on all the different township war memorial sites to mark Remembrance Sunday (8 November) in an unannounced private tour of the borough.
With no official services this year, the Mayor felt it more important than ever to thank those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Mayor Sheerin said: "It was especially important in this year of adversity that we do not forget those who fought for our freedom during the last century and made the ultimate sacrifice. Also its important that we thank those in our armed services that still defend our country and are involved in fighting oppression across the globe.
"We can also take this opportunity to show our admiration and gratitude to our NHS and front line services who are engaged in a war of a different kind. There are so many putting their lives on the line, just like our soldiers in the past, for our freedom from a different kind of enemy.
"May God bless them and keep them safe in the fight against the Covid-19 virus and hopefully next year’s Remembrance Sunday will be celebrated without restrictions. We shall never forget."
