Remembrance Sunday 2020: Whitworth

Date published: 08 November 2020

The Mayor of Whitworth has privately laid a wreath on behalf of Whitworth Town Council at the cenotaph on Thursday 5 November.

During the wreath laying, Mr Dave Tattersall, principal cornet of Whitworth Vale and Healey Band played the last post for the 42nd consecutive year, this year. The wreath laying has been filmed so that the public can watch along safely at home and be part of our community in their own private remembrance.

Usually the service and procession would attract a crowd of around 700 people, including the local uniformed organisations, town, borough and county councillors, war veterans, representatives of the town’s schools, places of worship and community organisations, Lancashire Constabulary and Fire Service, and members of the public.

The Mayor of Whitworth, Councillor Lynda Barnes, said: “This year it is with great sadness that I lay the wreath alone but with great pride that our community are able to adapt to the current situation to protect each other. I look forward to 2021 when we can once again remember together but for now urge everyone to take care of themselves and each other.

“On behalf of myself and the town council, I thank all who will join in the doorstep silence at home and Dark Room Media who volunteered their time to film the event to make sure that everyone could take part safely at home.”

In order to show respect for the fallen on Remembrance Sunday, Whitworth Town Council proposed that, those who wish to, should don their uniform and medals (those medals of their forebears to be worn on the right), where appropriate, and stand outside their front door at 11am to observe a two minute silence.
