Jazz on Sunday enjoys successful return to Castleton

Date published: 10 September 2008

Rochdale's only jazz club, Jazz on Sunday, enjoyed a successful return to Castleton at its new headquarters at Rochdale Mayfield Rugby Club, with nearly 100 enthusiasists packing in to hear a great performance by the seven-piece Dave Donohoe Band.

However the club is still looking for more members as they hope to build revenue so that they can keep their regular Sunday gigs going.

Rochdale Online's jazz reviewer Tony Sheldon said: "Thanks Rochdalians, you proved that you really do want a jazz club. The uncertain feeling of both pessimistic and optimistic apprehension that awaited the first gig back at Castleton resulted in an evening of relaxed musical appreciation.

"Jazz on Sunday got the thumbs up which was urgently required to promote a positive frame of mind, but this does not mean we are ‘out of the woods’. We still need to build up some financial reserves, and without the sponsorship of the concert by a donor who wishes to remain anonymous, the jazz facility would have folded."

The club is seeking business sponsors who can provide any cash amount to help keep the club going.

Club chairman Mike White said: "We need a bigger audience and this really great new venue deserves an increasing clientele.

"It is a superb disabled-friendly, ground-floor, large, re-decorated, bright and airy and well-equipped room with excellent bar and all-round viewing of the band stand – the previously intrusive pillars have been removed. It is a very tasteful and well–lit room and we were lucky to get it."
