Poems for Positivity walking trail launched in Heywood

Date published: 17 May 2021

A new walking trail ‘Poems for Positivity’ has been launched in Heywood by local company PossAbilities, supported by GM Walking.

A trail with a difference through imaginative themes of dragons and fairies to name a few, community interest company PossAbilities - which supports people with learning disabilities - has launched the interactive trail for people to get ‘moving in a more positive direction’.

In addition to stout footwear, walkers will need a smartphone or a tablet to add a bit more fun and enjoy seven animations that form the Poems for Positivity route, available via the what3words app.

The poems are recited by performance poet Tommy Calderbank who, 25 years after the death of his mother Maggie, decided to get positive and open the drawer of poems his mother had left him and get them published.

He has chosen six of his favourites, with the seventh penned by William George Scrivens who receives support from PossAbilities.

Rachel Law, CEO of PossAbilities said: “2020 was hard for everyone. Let’s look forward rather than back. Our interest is in the future - we intend to spend the rest of our lives there. That is why we created the Poems for Positivity Trail. It’s a chance to get out into the open; to walk and talk; and to come home feeling ever more positive.

“By the time participants have finished, you will have walked five kilometres or 6,250 steps and burned off one and a half Mars Bars.”

You can access each of the poems relevant to the walking route by scanning a QR code at seven locations around the town. At each location you will find the address and the what3words tag of all the poems.

The what3words app is an easy way to identify precise locations. Every 3m square in the world has been given a unique combination of three words: a what3words address. You can use the what3words address to navigate to precise locations using three simple words.

what3words is free to use for those who download the app. It works on mobile phones using iOS and Android operating systems and can be downloaded on the App Store and Google Play.

Though the official start of the trail is Cherwell Wellbeing Hub, you can start and finish the trail anywhere you want.
