Plans submitted to change former Mecca Bingo into an indoor sports complex

Date published: 06 April 2023

A planning application has been submitted to change the former Mecca Bingo in Rochdale town centre into an indoor sports complex and gym.

The plans propose changing the internal space to create four football pitches, four practice cricket lanes, a gymnasium, and a small running track.

Many of the Smith Street building’s existing facilities would be retained including the main reception, bar and dining area, kitchen, customer toilets and storage and maintenance rooms.

The only change would be the creation of some customer changing rooms.

The planning documents add: “The development will provide an excellent sport and fitness use within the town centre environment, which will provide health and wellbeing benefits to the local community and help to preserve and support the vitality and viability of the centre.”

Mecca Bingo occupied the now-vacant building for 20 years until its closure last year.
