Rochdale RSPCA & District senior 'kitizen' Morticia needs a £1,000 operation to help her live medication-free

Date published: 14 February 2024

The Rochdale and District RSPCA at the Hollingworth Lake Animal Centre is raising funds for one of its ‘senior kitizens’ to undergo a big operation so she can live out her life without medication.

Black cat Morticia, believed to be around the age of 13, came to the local branch after her owner died. On her arrival, Morticia was found to have an overactive thyroid, which, if untreated, can cause a rapid heart rate, weight loss, restlessness and poor coat condition due to an overproduction of hormones.

To treat the condition, Morticia has to have four weeks of medication to stabilise her thyroid levels. If her blood levels have improved after four weeks, she will be able to undergo a thyroidectomy to remove her thyroid gland.

Heather Robinson, deputy manager of the Rochdale & District branch, said: “It is a big operation, but going through it means Morticia will be able live the rest of her life medication free and will no longer suffer the tricky symptoms that this condition can cause and this is why we really need your help.

“We are a self-funded branch and so this means that we have to raise all of our own funds in order to cover the costs of medication and vet bills for the residents in our care. Morticia's blood tests, medication and operation are likely to cost well in excess of £1,000 and so we are appealing to our loyal supporters to see if we can generate some help towards Morticia's treatment.”

She added: “Morticia has been a much-loved companion throughout her last 13 years and so it is understandable that finding herself here with us in a rescue environment may be a little bit overwhelming for her. Despite this, she is coping incredibly well and is always happy to be fussed and have a cuddle.

“Morticia has lots of adventures left to have and your donation could be paramount in allowing her to get to the point where she can find a retirement home and live happily ever after.

“If you are able to donate any amount to help us, then the team here would be so appreciative. We love every animal that comes through our doors and we really want to ensure that we can give them the best chance at a happy and healthy life.”
