Full list of Greater Manchester mayoral candidates confirmed

Date published: 06 April 2024

The list of candidates for this year’s Greater Manchester mayoral election has been confirmed.

Nominations to run in the election officially closed at 4pm on Friday (5 April), with polling day being Thursday 2 May. The list of election agents, and who they are representing, was posted at the headquarters of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) in the city centre on Friday afternoon.

On Monday (8 April), a formal Statement of Persons Nominated will be released online, the GMCA has also confirmed. However, with nominations now closed, no new candidates will be able to make it on to the ballot by the time that is released.

The list of candidates for the election are as follows, ordered alphabetically by surname:

  • Jake Austin – Liberal Democrats
  • Dan Barker – Reform UK
  • Nick Buckley – Independent
  • Andy Burnham – Labour
  • Laura Evans – Conservative
  • Hannah Spencer – Green

Polls will be open in the election on Thursday 2 May from 7am to 10pm. The deadline to register to vote is 11.59pm on Tuesday 16 April.

Photographic ID will need to be shown in order to vote at a polling station in this election and the local council election on the same date. The requirement to show photo ID at the polling station was introduced by the UK Government’s Elections Act which was passed in 2022 and came into effect for the first time in May last year.

Accepted ID includes a UK, European Economic Area (EEA) or Commonwealth passport; a UK, EEA or Commonwealth drivers’ licence and some concessionary travel passes, such as an older person’s bus pass.

A full list is available on the Electoral Commission web site.

Voters will be able to use expired ID if they are still recognisable from the photo.

If you do not have any of the accepted forms of ID, you can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate online until 5pm on Wednesday 24 April.

Voters must be registered in one of Greater Manchester’s 10 boroughs — Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, and Wigan — and aged 18 or over on polling day to cast their ballot.

For residents in the Rochdale borough, the easiest way to register to vote in person, by post or by proxy is at www.rochdale.gov.uk/RegisterToVote.
