Lower Spodden Valley - green corridor proposal

Date published: 25 September 2007

A 'Spodden Gorge' subcommittee of the Spotland Area Forum has been formed and has proposed a community-led project to create a safe 'Green Corridor' linking the communities of Spotland, Falinge and Meanwood with woodlands, wildlife habitats and amenity spaces in a valley rich with industrial history.

The area proposed is the Lower Spodden Valley between the “two bridges” on Spod Road - Foot Mill Bridge and Spotland Bridge. Lenny Barn is to the east and the River Spodden to the West (the project area is not part of the former TBA site, but to the south of it).

Initial proposals are centred on small projects on land in the valley that is owned by Rochdale Council.

A spokeman for the group said: "Community participation and consultation is paramount. This is a chance for us all to decide and act to ensure the lower Spodden Valley becomes a community asset and the gateway to 'Rochdale’s hidden gem' - Healey Dell Nature Reserve then onto to our Pennine Moorlands."

Small projects could include:

Pathway improvements (surfaces and drainage) on neglected Rights of Way in the valley. Allowing safe access for pedestrians and users of the Sustrans cycle network and Mary Townley bridleway.

Creation of new community woodland as part of the Pennine Edge Forest; (Broadleaf trees chosen by the next generation of citizens to see them into old age).

Improvements to existing native hedgerows along Spod Road.

Improved security to combat crime and anti-social behaviour.

Restoration of heritage features - such as the stone steps and the flagstone wall protecting the cliff edge near Falinge Fold.

Local history reports and interpretation boards giving the rich industrial history of the valley- mills, mines, packhorse routes and tenterfields.

Wildlife projects - schools participation linked to the National Curriculum. Bird and bat boxes.

The spokesman explained: "All these projects are achievable. They will take time and effort, but most importantly the consent and co-operation of local people. We can bid for funds and use this as an example of how our community can make permanent improvements to a neglected urban 'Green Corridor'."

The Spodden Gorge subcommittee comprises of local residents, campaigners and Groups (Friends of Healey Dell, Save Spodden Valley), politicians from several parties, council officers and other stakeholders.

There are monthly meetings at the Scout Hut, Spotland Bridge - everyone is welcome.
