Redrow granted permission to build on Coral Mill site

Date published: 01 October 2007

Redrow Homes has received planning permission to build homes on the site of the now derelict Coral Mill on Shaw Road in Newhey.

Councillor Keith Swift said: “This is good news for Newhey, the village centre will be revitalised with a development that is modern and yet in keeping with the existing style.  The people living by this site have for the last few years that the Mill has been derelict, suffered endless nuisance, with gypsy camps, numerous fires and metal being stolen from the building making it unsafe.  Local shops, especially the Post Office which is under review, will welcome the increase in trade that new residents will bring, and new property generally means an increase in property prices for everyone nearby.”

A spokesman for Redrow Homes said: "There will be subject to legal completion taking place and the planning permission being implemented a pot of money to be used on public open space."

Rochdale Fire amp; Rescue Service will welcome the news, in June this year, following a spate of fires at the mill, Borough Commander Dave Astley said: “The building is now too dangerous for my crews to fight the fires from inside and we have to bring in a hydraulic platform from Oldham to reach the seat of these fires."
