Curtain Theatre hosts 'RENT' premiere

Date published: 16 June 2009

Whitworth Amateur Musical & Dramatic Society open this week with the regional amateur premiere of the multi award winning Musical RENT at the Curtain Theatre in Rochdale.

Inspired by Puccini’s La Bohème, RENT tells the story of a group of young artists in 1990s New York as they struggle to fulfill their aspirations against a backdrop of poverty and the AIDS epidemic.

Jonathan Larson’s powerful rock score drives this inspirational tale of love, betrayal and hope - and ultimately the celebration that there is ‘no day but today’.

This multi-award winning musical captured the hearts and spirits of a generation when it opened on Broadway thirteen years ago, and has continued to move and enthuse audiences across the globe ever since.

“We are just applying the finishing touches this week,” says director Andy Kelly. ”It is going to be the biggest, boldest and bravest show we have ever staged. The cast and crew have worked so hard to put the show together and those coming to see it will be blown away.

"We have a very talented and diverse cast too. In addition to our core society members, actors have joined us from Salford, North Wales, Manchester, Oldham and Cheshire - such is the attraction of RENT.”

RENT is a modern, energetic and challenging show- not just for the cast but for the audience as well. It has gained cult status in a short space of time and is already in the top ten longest running Broadway shows of all time.

“We are playing eight nights and there are only a limited amount of tickets left now. We are still offering free places for dads on Fathers Day though as Sundays aren’t a traditional night to go to the theatre,” said Mr Kelly.

The show opens at the Curtain on Milkstone Road on Friday (19 June) and runs until Saturday 27 June.

All tickets are priced at £10 each. Performances start at 7.30pm, with doors open at 7pm.
