Asbestos waste in Spodden Valley must be made safe
Date published: 26 February 2008
To co-incide with Action Mesothelioma Day the Health amp; Safety Executive (HSE) has launched a nationwide media campaign to raise awareness of continued exposure to asbestos - especially for young tradespeople in the construction industry. Radio adverts are currently being broadcast regularly in the North West by the HSE.
Jason Addy of Save Spodden Valley poses a question: "The HSE confirm that asbestos in buildings can pose a deadly threat to those who come into contact with respirable fibres. These amounts of disturbed asbestos can be measured in grammes. What safeguards will there be to ensure that the Spodden valley is made permanently safe?
"Asbestos Company documents state that tonnes of dust was dumped weekly. This was done for decades. Reading these same documents suggest that the soil surrounding the factory must contain concentrations of asbestos 'fallout'.
"The HSE confirm that mere grammes of disturbed asbestos fibre can cause cancer decades after inhalation. If so, then the tens of thousands of tonnes of asbestos waste dumped in the Spodden Valley must be made permanently safe."
