New SSV logo launched at Parliament

Date published: 22 May 2007

The new Save Spodden Valley campaign logo has been launched at Westminster at a meeting of Parliamentarians, national and international campaigners.

The logo sees the Spodden valley campaign into its third year. The name "Save Spodden valley" itself was in response to the destruction of Woodlands around the asbestos factory in May 2004. (An area almost the size of three football fields were destroyed on the weekend of 14/15 May).

The new logo, designed by Alice Smith, in consultation with local schoolchildren, has combined themes around the design of a sturdy tree with deep roots.

An SSV spokesman said: "The roots are displayed in a design, known in medical terms, as a 'bronchial tree' - the delicate air passages of the lung that too many people have had damaged by exposure to asbestos.

"This is to emphasise the need for a precious wooded Spodden valley that could and should be developed as a 'green lung' for Rochdale -  a safe and permanent amenity for all to enjoy as a gateway from the centre of Rochdale up to Healey Dell and beyond to the Pennine Moors.

"In addition to the community campaign having deep local roots, also such roots in Spodden valley's remaining woodland may help stabilise soil around the former asbestos factory."

SSV Co-ordinator Jason Addy met with American campaigner Linda Reinstein – director of the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organisation (ADAO).

Ms Reinstein repeated the words she recently wrote about Save Spodden Valley: “Save Spodden Valley remains a beacon of hope to others that change starts with a faint voice. You have our continued organizational support and solidarity for your fight for of safety and justice and a world free from asbestos.”

The new SSV logo may first be seen in Rochdale at this Wednesday’s Township meeting with campaigners asking questions at the public forum.
